Photographing the Kansas Night Sky at the Castle Rock Badlands

The workshop is open to all levels of photographers but will be very limited in size to only 6 participants to ensure highest quality instruction tailored to the experience level and needs of workshop participants.
Instruction will focus on assisting all gain the most from capturing beautiful images of the night sky. The Castle Rock Badlands is located in central Kansas not far from the town of Quinter and is said to be one of the 8 wonders of Kansas.
During this workshop we will have an opportunity to shoot the setting sun amongst these chalk and shale formations and consider compositional options for the night sky as we anxiously await the appearance of the Milky Way in the night sky.
As we prepare for our shoot we will discuss
- Camera Settings
- Star trails; Milky Way.
- Light Painting tools and techniques
Craig will actively work with each participant to ensure you understand the technical considerations and be certain you come away with some striking images.
WHERE: Castle Rock Badlands, is located about 4 hours west of Kansas City just off of Interstate I-70. It is not far out of Quinter, KS. There may be some accommodations in Quinter but some also available in Wakeeney, KS a little to the East off of I -70, where we will meet up and caravan to our shooting location. Castle Rock enjoys some of the darkest skies in Kansas and should allow for some great night image opportunities.
WHEN: June 1st we will meet up at 5 :00 pm in Wakeeney at the Super 8 office area. Before traveling on to Castle Rock we will discuss some techniques, review any restrictions, safety, and other general information before proceeding. We will then travel to the shooting location. As sunset approaches we will explore possible shooting locations for our later Milky Way shots and also have an opportunity to get some striking sunset images over the badlands.
The cost of this workshop workshop does not include lodging or travel to/from the workshop.

We will base out of the Wakeeney Super 8; however you are not required to room there. There are a few options in or around Wakeeney, including a Best Western and Econo Lodge.
